This Tuesday, former New York Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Sullivan will be formally installed as the 8th Bishop of the Church of Camden.  It is with great joy that we welcome Bishop Sullivan to our diocese and look forward to his ministry among us!  I haven’t met him yet, but truly look forward to working with him on your behalf and that of all the people of our diocese.

Bishop Sullivan comes to us with a great deal of experience as both a pastor and administrator.  He spent more than 20 years of his priesthood in parish ministry, including some of the poorest parishes in the Archdiocese of New York.  He has had extensive experience in ministry to immigrants, particularly Hispanic and East Asian.  He speaks fluent Spanish and has a deep appreciation for the different ethnic cultures that make up the Universal Church.  He has spent the last several years of his ministry as Vicar for Administration of one of the largest dioceses in the world, which will be a particular benefit to our diocesan offices and agencies.

At the same time, we wish our current Bishop, Joseph Galante, well as he retires.  Bishop Galante has worked tirelessly on behalf of our diocese, particularly the reconfiguration and reinvigoration of our parishes.  He has suffered several physical illnesses, including kidney failure, and undergoes dialysis treatments 3 days per week.  Consequently he requested an early retirement from the Pope who graciously granted it to the Lord’s suffering servant.

Let us keep both of our Bishops in our thoughts and prayers, wishing them good health and happiness, wisdom and grace, patience and perseverance in their roles as outgoing and incoming successors to the Apostles and Shepherds of the good Catholic people of southern New Jersey.

In His Love,

Fr. Mike
